Geothermal Lab Conference at SMU

Southern Methodist Universtiy in Dallas, Texas, is sponsoring a "Geothermal Lab Conference", on June 12 and 13th, 2007, at SMU's Cox School of Business. The theme of the conference is "Geothermal Energy Utilization Associated With Oil and Gas Development". The idea is to generate electricity by harnessing the heat in the ground and using existing oil and gas wells.

This is an old idea, but apparently there is some "new" technology being developed. The concept of using the heat in the Earth to generate electricity has merit. More details can be found at: www.smu.edu/geothermal. The cost to attend is $500 if you register on site. Geothermal energy offers tantalizing rewards, but there have always been insurmountable technical and economic barriers which have limited its use. At $500 to attend, it is rather an exclusive event, which is a shame.
